PART IV

To catch a predator who hunts among society's elite, one must first understand what makes perfect prey.

Charles Parker selected his victims based on wealth, vulnerability, and—most importantly—their need to maintain appearances.

Therefore, Lady Clarissa Rothschild was born: recently widowed, newly arrived from Bath, and possessed of substantial wealth with no family to protect her interests.

My years as a detective have taught me that the most effective disguise is often the one people expect to see.

Lady Clarissa was designed to be forgettable—another wealthy widow of a certain age, perhaps a touch befuddled, but keenly interested in valuable artifacts.

My silver hair and carefully chosen mourning clothes created exactly the image Parker would be looking for.

The role of my great-niece Emmeline as Miss Margaret Smith, my paid companion, was crucial to the deception.

A wealthy widow traveling alone might raise suspicions, but one accompanied by a slightly overprotective companion was perfectly natural.

Emmeline played her part beautifully, fussing over me with just the right blend of deference and exasperation.

The Savoy Hotel's Palm Court provided our stage for the first act.

If I do say so myself, I made quite the entrance in my widow's weeds, speaking perhaps a touch too loudly about my recent arrival in London and my plans to purchase a townhouse.

My substantial diamond rings caught the light as I fumbled with my lorgnette, playing every inch the vulnerable wealthy widow.

While I played my part in public, a carefully coordinated network of street vendors, shop girls, and servants kept watch on Parker's movements.

Mrs. Bridges' network proved invaluable, tracking his daily routines and, more importantly, his interactions with establishments known for handling questionable jewelry.

The bait was laid carefully over several days.

A dropped handkerchief here, a chance meeting there—each encounter carefully orchestrated to appear completely natural.

I made sure to mention my late husband's collection of gold snuff boxes and my own substantial jewelry collection, all while appearing endearingly oblivious to any potential danger.

Parker proved as predictable as he was predatory.

His first approach came, as expected, when I was examining an emerald necklace in a Bond Street jeweler's window.

A contrived accident with my handbag provided the perfect opportunity for him to play the gallant gentleman.

His practiced charm was flawless, though his eyes betrayed a calculating interest in my rings.

"Charles Parker, at your service," he had introduced himself, bowing over my hand with perfect manners. The spider introducing himself to the fly—or so he thought.

Over the next week, I allowed him to "accidentally" encounter me at various locations around London.

Each meeting reinforced the image of a wealthy, somewhat befuddled widow with valuable possessions and no close family.

Emmeline's reports confirmed that he was making inquiries about my supposed house in Bath and my financial situation.

The trap was baited further with careful mentions of my late husband's art collection and my own extensive jewelry collection.

Parker's interest sharpened visibly with each new detail, though he maintained his mask of polite attention perfectly.

A lesser detective might have missed the predatory gleam in his eyes when I mentioned my collection of gold snuff boxes.
